Stray Voltage Indicator
Built by Shilin Yuan
Each year, stray voltage in recreational and municipal waterways claims the lives of thousands of families, a largely preventable tragedy known as Electric Shock Drowning (ESD). To address this, I aim to design a portable, waterproof voltage detection buoy that can be deployed directly into the water to identify the presence of dangerous electrical potential, giving people the warning they need before entering the water. The device would be designed for rapid, one handed deployment and provide clear visual and audible alerts when hazardous voltage levels are detected. This tool would be invaluable for boat dock operators conducting routine safety checks, marina managers complying with electrical safety regulations, and emergency first responders assessing scene safety before entering the water.
